NEWBERY AWARD WINNERS
The Newbery Medal, awarded annually, had its beginning in 1921 when Frederic G. Melcher proposed an incentive toward better quality in children's books.   He offered a medal to be given to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published during the preceding year. This he named after John Newbery, famous 18th century English publisher and seller of children's books.
