Having friends is an important part of normal development for children. Although we often think of peer pressure as bad, it is possible for your children's friends to influence them to do good things as well.

Here are some ways to help your children resist negative peer pressure:

Develope a good relationship with them.
Teach your children to think about what others want them to do and why.
Teach them to decide for themselves whether something is right or wrong, helpful or harmful.
Sometimes children just need help getting away from a bad situation. Provide them with some responses they can use to resist peer pressure.
Practice situations with your child, trying various responses that your child is comfortable saying.

For further information and more in-depth material concerning this and other problems your child may be facing, please contact a counselor at the BOYS TOWN HOTLINE.
