Talking About Sex

If you are uncomfortable discussing sex with your child, try these suggestions to overcome your reluctance.

   Talk with a counselor or other professional.
   Read books on sexuality, or watch videotapes on ways to teach your child about sexual issues.
   Try to relax. Practice beforehand what you want to say to your child.
   Be honest about your discomfort with your child: "It's hard for me to talk about this but..."
   Approach the discussion with a sense of humor.
   Answer your child's questions simply and directly. Don't accuse; rather ask questions: "What do you know about...?"
